My Hair Loss Journey
When I was 22 years old I was diagnosed with a form of Hyperthyroidism called Graves Disease, an autoimmune condition that causes the thyroid gland to produce too much thyroid hormone. After receiving radioactive iodine treatment to essentially kill my thyroid, I was put on thyroid hormone replacement medication. This is where my hair loss journey begins.
A few months after starting the medication, Synthroid, I began to notice more hair fall out during washes. At first I didn't think much of it but after a few weeks of more and more shedding, I started to pay attention. I got to the point where brushing my hair was causing anxiety because with every pass of the brush, balls of hair were coming out. Then the bald spots started showing up. I was convinced I was going to lose all of my hair and I was not okay. I was a 22- year-old fresh out of college and teaching at my first job and now I was not only dealing with hair loss, but multiple other symptoms from thyroid disease including rapid weight gain, brain fog, lethargy, and a slew of others. After a few visits to a dermatologist and testing to determine if I had Alopecia, it was concluded my hair loss was due to an imbalance of thyroid hormone and frequent blood draws would be necessary to keep my TSH levels in check. I was sent on my way and basically told that due to my thyroid disorder, I had a lifetime of hair loss issues to look forward to. Well, great... thanks.
Fast forward to 46-years-old and I was STILL battling hair loss. Even with keeping up on my thyroid meds, the hair loss continued for 24 years and was a constant source of anxiety. Since being diagnosed with Graves and the symptoms such as hair loss that go along with it, I did have peaks and valleys. I would have months of little shedding but then months and months of terrible fall out and bald spots.
Then, about two years ago, I happened on an ad in a magazine and it immediately caught my attention. It was an ad for something called Nutrafol, a hair loss supplement that is backed by science and dermatologists and proven to dramatically slow shedding and also help with regrowth. After years of taking biotin, applying minoxidil and countless other treatments, I was willing to try anything. So I ordered my first three months. The suggested 4 capsules a day seemed like a lot, but I made it part of my daily routine and stuck with it. Two years later, I am still taking Nutrafol and I am here to tell you... it works. After starting Nutrafol, the shedding slowed down so much my husband noticed a difference with our shower drain (he needed to clean it out regularly because my hair was constantly clogging everything up). My hairdresser saw a difference, friends started telling me how great my hair looked and I started getting baby hairs coming in at my temple and corners of my hairline where hair hadn't grown for years. I cried a different type of tears this time... happy tears!
After so many years of dealing with the ups and downs of hair loss, I have finally found something that works and I do not plan to stop taking Nutrafol anytime soon. So, ask me if I think Nutrafol is amazing and practically magic and I will say YES. Then ask me if it has completely stopped the shedding and I will say, No, it has not. Remember, shedding hair is part of the normal hair growth cycle and it's normal to lose up to 100 hairs a day. What Nutrafol has done is dramatically slowed the amount of shedding and that is all I can ask for! I am now 48-years-old and take Nutrafol Women, formulated for women over the age of 45, which has other added health benefits. There are also formulas for post-partum, plant-based lifestyle and hormone imbalance. I implore you... if you have issues with hair fallout try Nutrafol. Do the research, talk to your doctor and make the move to start taking those four capsules a day. And if you do decide to start, I hope it makes as big a difference for you as it has for me!
